Newcastle trio Waves of Dread have certainly been busy. The band haven’t allowed themselves to be knocked back by pandemic-related uncertainty in the slightest, releasing their aptly-named second EP II back in July, with more new material on the way next year. Before then, though, they’re releasing a reworked version of EP highlight ‘Stars’. It goes full shoegaze – an explosive, noisy update on its acoustic origins, and you can hear it first on XS NOIZE ahead of its release on Sunday.
Chief songwriter Nick JH says of the song: “I’ve had the idea to do a new take of the song since its original release and I’m over the moon with the results. Initially, I wanted the song to have a similar feel to Waves of Mutilation (UK Surf) by Pixies – the bass and drums driving throughout is certainly taken from their style of playing, but the song naturally took on a bigger, more dreamy feel during recording, not unlike the band namechecked in the song, Slowdive. … I feel it’s also important to mention that the song has taken on new meaning for me on a personal level, which is what really spurred me on to give the song new life.”
