Following the release of her album of the same name, watch a new video for LoneLady’s track ‘Hinterland’, her third single from the album to make the BBC 6Music A List. Working again with ‘Bunkerpop’ director Juliet Ellis, and featuring animation by Daniela Sherer, in the new video for Hinterland a 70s palette is subtly evoked in the rich tones and glowing lights of an intimate studio performance, punctuated by playful animation and phrases to hint at Sesame Street and Soul Train.
Translating as ‘the land behind’, Hinterland the album explores the different landscapes of her home, Manchester. The title track conjures Audenshaw, Campbell’s childhood home.
”….this is the land of childhood wonder, and magic, and playful movement..we’d create kingdoms with our imaginations….and that’s a big part of what the song is about…”
Recorded and produced by Campbell in her home studio, she then finished the production with Bill Skibbe, sending her music through an old console that had one previous owner – Sly Stone. Imprinting the dust of 70s funk onto 5 minutes of a machine-groove loop of Linn drums and cello, frazzled guitar solos and choppy rhythms to magic up A-funk, that is, Parliament/Funkadelic, Rufus, Arthur Russell and Prince via the playgrounds and terraces of Audenshaw, a small town in Manchester.
Lonelady also takes the album on tour, dates below. More UK and Europe dates to come in October/November.
